Dusseldorf is the capital of the North Rhine-Westphalia state and Germany's seventh largest city.

The Deutsche Bahn is one of the easiest ways to travel across Germany. Take the train from Dusseldorf’s main railway station, which is very near the airport. Visit Deutsche Bahn for more information.

Dusseldorf holds many major trade fairs throughout the year. If you’re visiting one, try planning some extra time to visit the city’s other sights.

MedienHafen is Dusseldorf's former trading port on the Rhine. The area has been a playground for architects since the 1970s and now there many beautiful and colourful buildings.

The Düsseldorfer Stadttor is also in MedienHafen, a 75-meter triangular glass building, with the nearby Rheintum building soaring 240 metres in the sky. Dine 172 metres up in the building’srevolving restaurant and enjoying the changing view throughout your meal.  The MedienHafen area itself is full of cafes and restaurants so, no matter what your budget, you won’t go hungry.

The charming centre of Dusseldorf’s old town, Altstadt, has a variety of cafes, restaurants and shops in which to enjoy an afternoon out of the office. It is situated on the Rhine and has a long promenade from which to enjoy river views or hop on a boat tour around the harbour. Open-air exhibitions, free concerts and children’s events also take place here. Carlsplatz’s small market is a great place to shop for souvenirs, and if you are visiting around Christmas, the big Christmas market in front of City Hall is an exciting place to buy gifts and treats.

For luxury items and high-end goods, visit Germany's most fashionable shopping street, Königsallee - usually just called Kö - located a few blocks away from the Altstadt. Here you will find exclusive shops, restaurants, galleries and auction houses.

Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, also called K20, is a beautiful building with a wavy black facade. Its museum houses a great collection of international art from the 20th century. If you buy a ticket to Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen you can also visit the Kunstsammlung im Ständehaus (K21), with a free shuttle bus service between the two museums. After enjoying the museum’s contemporary art you can admire breath-taking views over Dusseldorf from its top floor. Find out more.
